Designing and prototyping an all-new Software as a Service (SaaS) application called Periscope.
Periscope was a concept-to-launch project that unfortunately never quite made it out of the build phase. Originally conceived to reimagine water resource management, it aimed to take water modelling software to a place not seen before.

My Role
From workshops with water modellers to interactive prototypes, I was responsible for transforming Periscope from a theoretical concept into an investable product.
Working directly with hydrogeologists and engineers, I translated complex data, concepts and workflows into user flows, wireframes and interactive prototypes. As the sole designer on the project, I was responsible for prioritising the areas of the application that would deliver the greatest value for an initial release, balancing user needs, technical constraints and commercial objectives.
Close collaboration with stakeholders throughout the project ensured design decisions aligned with business goals while remaining grounded in the needs of the end user.

Brand Identity
Periscope's colour palette was thoughtfully chosen to reflect the core principles of the software.
Blue, representing water's depth and reliability, forms the foundation of the brand, emphasising precision in modelling. The addition of green signifies the environmental focus, promoting harmony and sustainability.
Roboto was chosen as the primary typeface due to its simplicity and excellent readability, making it well-suited to a complex and information-dense environment like Periscope.

UX Planning
Taking the complex process of water modelling and transforming it into a linear, clearly defined and intuitive user flow.
Working directly with scientists and engineers who spoke in highly technical terms, while having only decades-old software available for research, made for a significant UX challenge. I held workshops and feature development sessions with stakeholders to ensure I fully understood the user goals behind each screen and function. From there, I applied core UX principles to create experiences that were intuitive, efficient and aligned with user needs.
Many areas of the platform relied on familiar UX patterns such as forms, modals and complex control panels. The challenge was not reinventing these components, but applying them thoughtfully to simplify complex workflows. Information was carefully grouped and prioritised, ensuring content remained digestible while allowing users to quickly access the tools and data they needed.

04
Product Design
Breaking the norm and elevating water modelling software out of the 20th century.
Time spent researching, workshopping and validating processes with water modellers and scientists allowed us to create a more considered interface with less clutter, greater control and faster results.

05
Interactive Prototype
Built as an advanced prototype to support crucial UX testing and showcase the product's capabilities to potential investors.
With over 90 screens designed, I crafted a complete prototyping experience, creating all the key pages required for the application and ensuring a user-friendly interface that extended far beyond a simple showcase.
Building such a comprehensive prototype allowed for early-stage user testing, an essential step for a product being developed from the ground up. By creating realistic user journeys and interactions, stakeholders were able to experience the platform as a functioning product rather than a collection of concepts and wireframes (also helping funding).
The prototype was tested internally with both the core Periscope team and colleagues who had little prior involvement in the project. This provided valuable feedback from users with varying levels of familiarity, helping to identify assumptions, validate design decisions and uncover opportunities for improvement before development began.
